English For Communication. (SENTENCES)


 

Language is a means of communication. We communicate our ideas mainly through speech and writing using language. We use sentences in the communications of ideas. A sentence is a group of words that convey meaning. Words are to be arranged in a proper order to make a meaningful sentence. There are four kinds of sentences. (i) Assertive Sentences (ii) Imperative Sentences (iii) Interrogative Sentences (iv) Exclamatory Sentences Assertive Sentence A sentence that says something is called an Assertive Sentence Or A sentence which states something is called Assertive Sentence. Examples:-



You are very clever. She will hit the rising ball. I am happy today. The milk is pure. The baby is crying. Assertive Sentences are also known as Declarative Sentences, Declarations and Statements always end with a full stop. Imperative Sentences An Imperative sentence is a request, an order, or a command. Examples:- Please help me. ( Request ) Please open the door. ( Request ) Please let him go to bed. ( Request ) Come in . ( Order / Command) Get out. ( Order / Command) Look outwards. ( Order / Command) An imperative sentence ends with a full stop. Interrogative Sentence An interrogative sentence is a question. Example:- What is your name? Where do you live? Who are you? Are you happy? An interrogative sentence always ends with a question mark (?). Most of the interrogative sentences start with question words. Example:- What, Which, Why, Where, When, How, etc. Exclamatory Sentences An Exclamatory sentence is one that contains a strong feeling or emotion. Examples:- What a victory that was! How hot it is today! What a lovely day it is! What a beautiful scene it was! How slowly he walks! An Exclamatory Sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!).
