ARTICLES.

 There are two types of ARTICLES. 

They are-:

 1.Definite Article

2.Indefinite Article.


Definite Article-: the 

Indefinite Article-:a/an.


When any one of the two Indefinite Articles is used?

"A" and "an" mean one in number.

"A" is used before a word beginning with a Consonant Sound even if it starts with a Vowel.

Examples-:

A cat.

A dog.

A man.

A woman.

A university.

A union.

A useful thing.

A unit.

A European.


       "An" is used before words starting with a Vowel sound even if it starts with a Consonant.

Example-:

An elephant.

An apple.

An orange.

An orphan.

An umpire.

An ass.


An heir.

An hour.

An honest man.


Definite Article "the" is used to denote a particular person or thing.

Example-:


The chair in this room is made of wood.

He often plays the Piano. 

                                                           When we speak of the same thing again we use "the".

Example-:

A girl had given a cake for a dog. The girl saw the dog ate the cake.



                                                When a singular noun is meant to represent the whole class.

Example-:

The camel is a useful animal.


                                      Before the name of rivers, oceans, gulfs, bays, group of islands and mountain ranges.

Example-:

the Ganges, the Pacific Ocean, the Persian Gulf, the Bay of Bengal, the Andamans, the Himalayas.


                            Before the name of a newspaper.

Example-:The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Times of India.


           Before the name of a public building.

Example-:

The Taj Mahal, the Town Hall.


           Before the name of great books.

Example-:

The Bible, The Quran, The Vedas.


            Before a geographical name that describes a place.

Example-:

The Sahara, The Deccan.


               Before a proper noun only when it is qualified by an adjective.

Example-:

Akbar the great, Sivaji the great.


         Before the name of a nation, a party, or a community.

Example-:

The German, The Congress, The Muslims. 


                Before a common noun,  the name of a thing of which the only one exists.

Example-:

The sun.

The Moon.

The Sky.

The Earth.


                     Before an adjective which is used as a noun.

Example-:

The strong ought to protect the weak.


                  Before a noun to give the force of a superlative.

Example-:

He is the man for the job. (means the best man for the job)


                   Before an adverb in the comparative degree.

Example-:
