A good vocabulary is a must for writing and speaking good English. The right word in the right place provides the right idea to be conveyed. In two earlier posts, we discussed the importance and ways of improving vocabulary. Words are connected in such a way that to convey meaning in sentences. Letters must be connected rightly to spell and write without mistakes.
We have studied PARTS OF SPEECH. What are they? How many? They are 8 in number.
1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Verb
4. Adverb
5. Adjective
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction
8. Interjection
Now I have one question. Can anyone find a word that does not include PARTS OF SPEECH? I think no one can do that.
A noun is a unique word. We find a noun as per our need. We can master it easily.
A pronoun is a word that we use instead of a noun. Since there is a small number of pronouns we can easily master them.
Then comes the verb. The largest number of words belong to this genre. We can find them in a dictionary. We go through them in all forms of communication. Mastery of verbs can be attained only by practice. The most important thing in the study of a language is to acquire proficiency in the use of verbs.
Last but not least Adverb, Adjective, Preposition, Conjunction, and Interjection are also important. As they are very little in number in comparison with verbs it is easy to master them.
Antonyms & Synonyms.
First of all, we have to say about Synonyms. What is a SYNONYM?. The definition is-:Synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language.
For example, shut is a synonym of close.
Next, we can think of Antonyms. An ANTONYM is a word opposite in meaning to another
For example, good and bad.
By studying the Antonym and Synonym of a word we can increase our vocabulary four times.
That is A WORD+ITS SYNONYM, you get two new words.
The WORD with its ANTONYM, you get the third word.
The SYNONYM of the ANTONYM itself you will get the fourth word.
Again to VERBS.
Once again we have to come back to verbs. How can we increase our vocabulary by the study of verbs?
We have studied tenses earlier. Various forms of one verb are used in various tenses. By studying these we can increase our vocabulary.
Another one is ADJECTIVES. We have studied earlier about three kinds of ADJECTIVES. They are POSITIVE, COMPARATIVE, and SUPERLATIVE. Study the three forms and adjectives as much you can.It will also improve your vocabulary.
